There is an old adage in the marketing world that says “content is king”. This could not be more relevant today.

Having a pretty website just doesn’t cut it anymore (although there is a best place to start, in case you are interested). As harsh as it sounds, traditional forms of advertising have already been exhausted, and with time, have become less effective. This is where content marketing comes in. For those of you who don’t know, content marketing is considered to be even more important than traditional forms of advertising. According to data from The Content Council, 75% of customers prefer informational articles over ads. By informational ads, we mean quality content.

As Seth Godin rightfully states: “Content marketing is the only marketing left.”

Before I move forward, let’s rewind a little: what exactly is content marketing?

According to the Content Marketing Institute, Content Marketing is: “a marketing technique of creating and distributing valuable, relevant and consistent content to attract and acquire a clearly defined audience – with the objective of driving profitable customer action”.

Great, but how can content marketing help me and my business?

Creating valuable content for your website will drive engagement, traffic, and hopefully, the word every businessperson wants to hear: S A L E S.

The cool thing about Content Marketing is that you are actually helping generate sales without selling. Essentially you are providing valuable, or high-quality information to your customers. By putting high-quality information out there, be it on your website, blog, or social media site, you are making your prospective clients more informed about your product or service. This allows them to make more informed decisions when making a purchase (hopefully with your brand).

After all, the answer to any question is most likely online. Clients turn to the internet to get information on things they are interested in buying. Google will *hopefully* lead them to your page, and if they don’t find information that will satisfy them there, they will move on to your competition. That is, if they even find you to begin with (SEO, anyone?).

You might be thinking, “but companies are already sending me tons of information through the internet all the time!” True, but remember: most of this information is of no value or use to your customers, either because it is uninteresting or of no use to them. Content marketing works because it weaves through this sea of messages and gets to the right customer.  Thus, having good content which visitors will find interesting is imperative. In short: good content sells.

Bill Gates, being the visionary that he is, foresaw this 18 years ago.

Okay, so you get the gist of it, but the hardest part comes next: implementation.

You are great at what you do. How do you get your customers to hear you? Yes, SEO is also a right answer, but so is having effective, valuable content for your customers. Valuable content will create a favorable opinion of you in the customers’ mind, which will come in handy next time they want something related to your industry. As a matter of fact, 60% of consumers feel more positive about a company after reading custom content on its site.

Creating original content that will engage customers is not as easy as it seems. It is even more difficult when your content does not lead to any significant results, in terms of traffic or engagement. This is why you need to have a plan. Believe it or not, many companies engage in content marketing without truly understanding the art that goes behind it. A staggering 56% of respondents in a HubSport Report stated that they were indulging in content marketing without a plan. Now, I don’t want to be mean but, nothing good usually comes out of these three words put together.

Wouldn’t it be great if someone could just develop a content marketing plan for me and save myself all the immense effort, countless hours of work, blood, sweat and tears?
